Great Film
I thought this film was extremely realistic and well acted. Does anyone else agree? If so, what was your favorite performance in this film besides Julienne Moore?

I agree. I personally have a weak for Noah Wyle because of ER, but I liked the other characters too.

that ginger one was fugly.
shareI enjoyed this film because it expressed what its like to have family gatherings where there are lot of secrets and uncomfortable moments. NOt everythings a fairytale. Even christmas! I think that Laurel Holloman and Noah Wyle were kind of enjoyabe to watch because they just kind of observed the idiosycracies that made their family who they are. Blythe Danner was good too.
shareWTF? This is a discussion of a film. No one cares about your judgement of beauty or your irrelevant and incoherent comments.
shareI absolutely agree. Every one of these characters were as real as life itself, and there was nothing contrived about what happened at all. I really appreciated the lack of surges of dramatic music; the quiet understated tone of the movie was perfect. My favorite character, besides Mia (the gorgeous Julianne Moore who looks great even while she's being an acidic rhymes-with-witch)? Has to be the youngest daughter, but I'm damned if I can remember her name or figure out who the actress was. Duh!
shareto answer your question Thomas-White2 My favorite character,....Has to be the youngest daughter, but I'm damned if I can remember her name or figure out who the actress was. Duh!
the youngest daughters name was Leigh played by Laurel Holloman. Check her out now. She big time "L- word" main character.

I'm sorry Brendan, I can't agree with it being a great film. It was extremely well acted, with Julianne Moore and Noah Wyle especially. The family dynamic was rather realistic, however, the dialog was rather flat a great deal of the time, and many of the 'funny' situations came across just as ackward. The only resolution is that Elliot leaves Mia, after she may or may not had a self discovery with her grade school admirer, and yet her reasons for her hostility and use of sex remain unexplained.
The greatest conflict, the one between Warren and his father, is only confronted by Warren, his father is proven to be an emotional coward. So, is this to mean that Warren's dark, depressed view is the safe and correct perspective? That the forgiveness of Daphne is all that Warren needs for his own self respect? Or that Warren's dad really did desire Daphne for himself? Was Warren's mom unware or just indifferent?
As for Leigh? Did she have a story?
The Direction and Writing would have to put a more well rounded and developed story for my taste to be great. It had a lot of pretentions, but a lot of potential to live up, and didn't quite make it up there. Good, realistic performances aren't enough.

Agreed..I saw this now in 2021 and was not impressed with the unanswered questions..Did the mom know? Did Warren resolve his issues? So many things left dangling.. Could have been great because the cast was great but unfortunately it was mediocre for me.
sharebut failed.
shareI viewed most of the movie but I'am a little confused about Warren why was he so depressed?

Lac0074:
Warren was depressed b/c of his relationships with his father and with Daphne. 1) W felt guilt b/c he didn't do anything about his dad hitting on Daphne. 2) His relationship w/ Daphne crumbled b/c of this incident. 3) He'd been carrying around guilt b/c he knew that Daphne didn't know he saw them; he may have saved her a lot of grief had he just told her. So meanwhile she thinks she's been carrying around a secret all this time. 4) Then there's the whole other issue of W's unresolved negative feelings toward his dad...
This was a big part of the movie that exposed itself somewhere in the middle through flashback, so if you missed it, that's probably why you were confused.
Film rocked!
What's that coming over the hill, is it a monster, no it's John Prescot, ahhhhh!
I really didn't like the film much at all. I found it very boring and felt that it didn't really go anywhere. They introduced some very complex and interesting characters, let us get involved with them and ask questions and then ended the movie!
I really don't understand how a whole film being written around a randy father who tries it on with his sons girlfriend, could possibly have been thought interesting. There were far more interesting stories going on in that family that weren't explored, and I found it frustrating.
The sister, and the brother (not Noah Wyle or Julianna Moore) had little or no part in that film, and the brothers perky blonde girlfriend...why was she dangled in there? just to provide some humour and eyecandy? I don't get it, maybe thats just me.
Although I love these kinds of movies, but I wouldn't recommend this one at all. If you want to see a great drama, with complex characters, a splash of comedy and interesting but inappropriate relationships, then go and rent The Family Stone, The Big Chill...or even St Elmos fire.
I didn't like it either, for the same reasons mentioned. Was weird that it ended in the middle of the movie, and a lot of questions unanswered. However it was a little interesting to have a look into a "normal" family, where nothing really happened and there was no real problems, cause I didn't grow up in one myself, and I've never seen one either. Although it was very boring, if they want to write an entire movie based on nothing, atleast it could've had some funny comments or something funny in it so the audience wouldn't fall asleep. 3/10
shareI'll see your 3 and raise it 3 to 6/10, which is my default rating for mediocre films that maintain my interest. This feels like a parody of far superior dysfunctional-family films that were so popular in the '90s ("The Ice Storm," "American Beauty," etc.). The video box described it as a "bittersweet comedy," which seems odd because I didn't see anything played for laughs here – at least not intentionally.
