Subtitles question

Should I watch with Gaiman's subtitles or the direct translation?

I would be listening to the original Japanese audio, of course.

Gaiman's translation isn't actually a word for word translation, so if you want it as "pure" as possible, watch the Japanese sub. That's not to say that Gaiman's script is bad, it just different in a few places. Nothing drastic, and I can't remember anything off the top of my head, but I remember watching the English dub with the Japanese subtitles and there were some subtle deviations.

and goes down easier for English-speaking ears. I'm a purist myself, but the cruder, closer-to-transliteration subtitles were awkward, and I have to admit I appreciate the smoothness of Gaiman's version (English 1 in my copy). For what it's worth I've heard that at least once they took Gaiman's translation and showed it with Japanese subtitles, in Japan.
