I don't mean to be that guy but I think this film is overrated.

This is one of those films it seems like everybody loves and you never seem to see anybody who hated it. I was pretty hyped up for this film because its praised as a flawless epic but my god do I find this movie bland! Its literally just a generic high budget epic Fantasy except animated. None of the characters were interesting especially Mononoke herself who is the queen of bland and forgettable even though the film is named after her. The plot is essentially just another man vs nature theme much like what we got with Miyazaki's previous film Nausicaa however Nausicaa at least created an interesting world and environment even if I didn't think it was a masterpiece either.Actually I usually do think Ghibli in general is overrated however usually Ghibli films have this charm to them you can almost always expect but this film didn't even have that charm to it. Also the gore in this film was laughable with people's arms and heads coming off with arrows just looks ridiculous.

P.s. I just wanna say how funny it is how people complain about the violence in this film when its really not that bad. Very pg 13 stuff.

If you don't mean to be "that guy", then don't be. Each piece of individual art will create many different reactions among many different people. This does of course mean that certain popular or highly rated pieces will attract detractors. That said, I've never considered this film in particular to have overwhelming and undeniable popularity. Sure, the film was massive in Japan, but it's never gotten near that respect in the US. For me the film has never been a major personal favorite, but I still greatly enjoy watching it. As an animation film, it is a film that I have the upmost respect for and have felt it is deserving of any praise it receives. If you didn't like it that's fine, but it doesn't automatically become overrated because someone on the internet says so. I don't like the idea of calling films overrated, but regardless I feel this film has been rated fairly.

This film gets a ton of praise among fans of animation and I don't just mean anime fans its often treated as an untouchable work of art by many. You can't say its not that popular when it has an 8.4 score on IMDB (the highest rated animated film I believe is Spirited Away with 8.6). Here in America its pretty much the most popular anime film along with Spirited Away and maybe Grave of the Firefly's.

It might not be that popular among casual movie watchers but its ignorant to deny its overwhelmingly and undeniably popular among animation fans.

Okay, but even with all that said, it doesn't have to bother you. None of those films you mentioned are my favorites either, but I'm not going to go around and tell people their favorite film's are overrated. As far as IMDB ratings go, there are a lot of question marks regarding the ratings of certain animated films. I'd love it if all the ratings reflected how I feel about them, but sadly it doesn't work that way.

IDK. Sounds like you do.

The plot is essentially just another man vs nature theme

A crude over simplification. The plot also revolves around a man battling against hate, both inside himself and in others.

The world of Princess Mononoke was beautiful and enchanting. A clash of the old world and the new with spirits and gods still roaming the land.

The violence far from being ridiculous perfectly highlights the brutality of the clash.

Mononoke herself was not at all bland and represented the violent meeting of these two worlds. She is torn, part of both worlds, yet wholly in neither.

Can't stop the signal.

It's a good and beautiful movie but I get what you are talking about. It's just one of those cases where the fanboys are taking it too much out of it or praise it erroneously. Worst of all, they are comparing it to Disney animations and think it's "better". It's apples and oranges people. They simply praise it because it's not from the Hollywood. I can go on and on about the matter but it's really useless. Time wasting. It's like Star Wars series. How many movies of the series were actually good?
