It's not a biological virus. He's been touched by hate. Which meant he'd have to leave either way. So the troubles of traveling would still be there, but he'd only have one arm and still be infected.

Well, that was an option. Eboshi even attempts to do this. I think he was hopeful for a cure, but then it became too late.
