One thing I don't quite get...

Ashitaka said he would help reconstruct the ironworks and he wanted San's help. Both he and San seemed to think that the forest was very valuable. So how can you continue with ironworks and NOT cutting down trees? Eboshi said they were going to build it "better" this time. How?

I think this was where the film faltered a bit by not offering a very satisfying conclusion to the conflict. It felt like a vague resolution, hoping that they could create a more balanced harmony between the ironworks and the forest.

Maybe they would cut down less trees? Or perhaps they'd go green, with hybrid technology.

i think you might have got it wrong. in the end ashitaka was going back to his original town, and san was going back to the forest with the wolves, can't recall something about reconstructing ironwork.

reply

That's not what happened at all. They specifically said he couldn't go back to his village, and his village was nowhere near San's forest for him to be able to "be close by."

Except in the final bit of dialogue Ashitaka explicitly states he's going to help rebuild Irontown, but tells San he'll be close by.

reply

At the ending, Ashitaka did not mention anything about rebuilding the town, but only to stay there and that he would visit San. However, I watched the movie with Japanese dialogue and English sub. Did you guys happen to be watching the movie in another language or something? Coz it is common for dubs to change certain dialogues ~

reply

I just checked and there is indeed a difference in translation. The English dub states that Ashitaka wants to help rebuilding Irontown while the original only says he is gonna stay there.

Here's both subs side by side: https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/d2e7/ro3abwro0i5oeda6g.jpg

Just finished watching the film and had the same feeling. What the heck are we suppose to believe? Nothing is resolved, the movie will just repeat itself again. As soon as the forest spirits head got blown off the movie went in to limbo and almost ruined it for me.

reply

That is exactly the effect Miyazaki was going for. Nothing is resolved because it's not something that can really be resolved. Man vs nature will be a constant struggle. The one consolation is that each side has a bit more understanding of the other at the end. We can only hope they will be more mindful of each other so it doesn't get as out of hand the next time.

Why cant the hero just cut off his arm and prevent the infection from spreading?

reply

Cuting off his arm was an option. Eboshi even attempts to do this ("I'm getting tired of hearing about this curse of yours! Let me just cut the damn thing off!") I think he was hopeful for a cure, but then he waited too long and it spread too much.

As for the OP's question, I think the humans and the forest came to a type of truce. Eboshi's statement of building a better village mot likely meant they wouldn't do things like they did before, and would build a village that wouldn't disturb the forest, like a farmland of sorts.
