directors cut!

I know that Guillermo disowns this film but i feel despite the inteference from the suits he still made a fine film.Im sure there is footage somwhere in the vaults that He could use to augment this movie into the film he envisioned. This is an underated gem in the genre and it deseves better than a bare-bones dvd release.

I like this film a lot, but I also can't help but think there must be footage with all the plot elements in them somewhere lost or hidden. So, a directur's cut would be appreciated.

reply

I have never heard that he disowned the film, but I can imagine a director's cut would have a much bleaker, more pessimistic ending. Mimic is a great film until the very end, at which time it gives us a 'feel good' ending that feels totally out of synch with the rest of the movie.

Was that Toro's complaint? Was this an ending foisted upon him by the studio execs?

reply

yes
weinstein *beep* him with this *beep* ending

Haha, you are a clownshoe mate. Sod off. - Some Brit

There is a workprint available at this site that resembles the film as Del Toro originally envisioned it:

Look under 'M'

Who wouldn't tittybang Jessica Alba right now?

reply

Have you seen the workprint?

Would it be anything like a director's cut...

reply

It's listed as "D+" quality - I've seen numerous workprints, and anything less than "C" is pretty much unwatchable. The 'Alien3' workprint is a good example of how bad they can get.

Rumor has it that now that the Weinsteins have left Miramax, he is considered a Special Edition DVD and an attempted Director's Cut. He evidently hinted at the possibility at a Comic-Con interview. Hopefully, it'll come to pass!

Go to Criterion and ask them to work on Satyajit Ray films, a good Kwaidan rerelease.

reply

Pretty sure he said in an interview that he liked some bits but the Weinsteoisn were hell to work with and he wouldn't recut the film because of personal reasons. I could find the citation if no one else can.

reply

Hmm. I guess that maybe he's changed his tune. In a recent interview

(I can't seem to hyperlink. Sue me .), he seems to have warmed up to the idea. I guess that we'll see.

This was a great movie...It was one of the films that inspired me to become a filmmaker...Plus Del Toro is one of my favorite film directors

Q:Will you ever do a special edition of Mimic?

A:We ARE doing it. The other day we watched parts of my cut for the first time in 10 years and I LOVED IT!! I had forgotten what a different movie it was. It will be released in a couple of years but we are indeed already on the way of doing a fabulous 'Director's Cut' that I can finally love!!! There's so much of that movie that I love and so little I hate - but I hate that 'little' very deeply.

Unfortunately it is. From the link you posted:

Update: *beep* April Fool's Day. This is why we don't run "fool-ish" stories. Only half of the below info is true. There is no Mimic: Director's Cut DVD coming, sorry folks.

However, Del Toro and co. ARE working on a special edition/directors cut for future release, it just isn't being released on the date listed.

reply

According to one of the guys that runs Guillermo's website, Guillermo told him the Mimic Directors Cut isn't happening anymore. I guess its gonna join Nightbreed and the Exorcist 3 in the realm of director's cuts we'll never see.

reply

I just spoke with Del Toro a few days back at his book signing at Meltdown Comics on Hollywood and he confirmed a Director's Cut of "Mimic" and a Criterion release of "Cronos"!

That's great, but when is this likely to happen?

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

Thats great news. both of these films deserve a better release.
