this film got del Toro booed

I was at a preview screening of Hellboy in March, and director Guillermo del Toro mentioned he had made Mimic, which the packed theatre promptly responded to by booing. The boos were quickly followed by laughter... first because a lot of people (including me) thought it was funny a director was getting booed at the screening of his latest film, because of an earlier film of his, but also because he responded perfectly. He wipped out his wallet and said "OK, OK, I'll give you your 10 bucks back", knowing full well this film is a turkey. His response defused the situation and he continued talking about Hellboy, and it turned out mentioning Mimic was relevant to his speech, because it was during the making of that film that he bought the rights to Hellboy.

Having seen Mimic, I felt the booing was appropriate, but the timing was funny.

Anyway... thought I'd share that with the rest of you.

I doubt the reaction would have been much better after they'd seen Hellboy - in fact, the boos would probably have been louder.

But I'd suggest the boos weren't so much for the quality of the film (although it is lacking), but more for the way it was taken out of his hands by the producers.

Since most of the people in the audience were Hellboy fans to begin with, there was applause at the end of it.

But, the boos were indeed for how badly Mimic sucked.

I guess I'm the only one who enjoyed Mimic more than Hellboy then

I agree, Hellboy was cool because of Ron Perlman, John Hurt & Selma Blair. Mimic was pretty ccol, I have no idea why this got booed, come on you got Mira Sorvino, Charles S. Dutton, F. Murray Abraham, Josh Brolin and Jeremy Northam for God sakes. But I guess people didn't like all the sciency stuff. I'm a fan of both movies, Hellboy 2 was better than the first IMO.

I know I'm very late to the party, Nomak, but I'd agree with you.

Though all three (Mimic, Hellboy, and Hellboy 2) have truly magical moments, I just couldn't get into the Hellboy flicks overall. For all their frenetic pace, I actually found them a bit boring.

Mimic, though ... yeah, it's clearly got flaws, and I could tell it was a troubled production just from watching it (and before I heard about any of the behind-the-scenes strife), but I think it's a more cohesive flick, and better at telling its story. Both Hellboy flicks (to me) play like draft scripts that never quite found their rhythm, and needed a couple more rewrites before they were filmed.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
