Hey, not everybody is a Del Toro's fanboy. I watched this movie when it was released and thought it was a piece of sh¡t. On the other hand, I loved "El espinazo del diablo". It wasn't until now that I found out "Mimic" was directed by Del Toro. But that doesn't change anything. Most people didn't like this movie. Like I said, I think it is a big, stinking pile of @#~€¬~#@

i agree. this movie is so much better than a 5.5.

I like Del Toro but this one is a bad movie (nearly awful). It doesen't deserve more then 6, I gave it 5.

I'd say it's a solid film. It has problems for sure; the pace kinda lurches in spots and the ending's tone doesn't match the majority of the flick, but scuttlebutt is that was studio tampering.

The story is interesting and the acting is pretty good; the effects are solid and the atmosphere is creepy. It doesn't exactly break new ground anywhere but movies don't have to be shockers or wildly innovative to be good. There's a reason "formulaic" works continue to be made, and that's because they do what most people want movies to do - entertain.

I'd peg it at a 6.5 or so. I paid to see it in the theatres, and I don't regret that decision. That's more than I can say for most of the movies I've seen in the last, say, ten years.
I don't doubt that a Director's Cut of the movie would be an improvement, considering some of the other work Del Toro has done, but Mimic is still a fun watch. Snag some popcorn and keep a can of RAID handy.

It is very good film. I liked this film so much when it came out and it was one of my favourite horror movies. I found out today that Del Toro directed this and I finally found explanation for great visual style in this one. It doesn't deserve 5.6 it's too low for such a suspensful, good-looking, amusing and overall very good film. 7.5/10

The suspense, monster designs and music are well executed for the most part. But in the end, it's a rather plainclothes monster movie that doesn't stand out, not to mention uninteresting protagonists and annoying kids (both the Brooklyn pair and the spooner) dragging it down.

No more than 6.1 if, you ask me.

I'd rate this movie at least a 7. I felt pretty indifferent to it when I first saw it on DVD, but after watching the director's cut, the pacing feels better and the suspense is very well done. It's not cerebral by any means, although the ideas behind the insect evolution and the mimicry itself are pretty clever I'd say.

Honestly, I feel like this movie is pretty underrated if anything, but maybe it would have been thought higher of had Del Toro had final cut. Also as Guillermo explains in the Blu-ray commentary, the contrast was ruined in the theatrical (and DVD) release because the studio was so afraid of pure blacks that the brightness was bumped up all across the board. In the end that probably just hurt a lot of the monster movie suspense because part of the fun is trying to make out what is on the screen and where it is moving to.

Out of the Del Toro movies, I'd certainly rank it higher than Blade II, Cronos, and the first Hellboy.

I gave Mimic a 5 out of 10 its all right but a bit slow.
