I'd say it's a solid film. It has problems for sure; the pace kinda lurches in spots and the ending's tone doesn't match the majority of the flick, but scuttlebutt is that was studio tampering.
The story is interesting and the acting is pretty good; the effects are solid and the atmosphere is creepy. It doesn't exactly break new ground anywhere but movies don't have to be shockers or wildly innovative to be good. There's a reason "formulaic" works continue to be made, and that's because they do what most people want movies to do - entertain.
I'd peg it at a 6.5 or so. I paid to see it in the theatres, and I don't regret that decision. That's more than I can say for most of the movies I've seen in the last, say, ten years.
I don't doubt that a Director's Cut of the movie would be an improvement, considering some of the other work Del Toro has done, but Mimic is still a fun watch. Snag some popcorn and keep a can of RAID handy.
