The Director's Cut - 27th September 2011!

Lionsgate has announced that Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi horror film Mimic will make its U.S. Blu-ray debut on September 27th. The 1997 Miramax catalog title stars Mira Sorvino (Romy and Michele's High School Reunion), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Jeremy Northam (The Tudors) and Giancarlo Giannini (Casino Royale).

Mimic, which is based on Donald A. Wollheim's short story of the same name, begins when cockroaches in Manhattan spread a deadly dieasase that claims the lives of several of the city's children. Entomologist Susan Tyler (Sorvino) creates another breed of insects to kill the roaches, but finds out years later that her genetically mutated specimens have evolved into monsters that can mimic human beings.

Update: Lionsgate has confirmed that the Blu-ray release of Mimic will in fact be an all new Director's Cut featuring 7 additional minutes of restored footage. Updated cover art has been created for this release, as well as a host of special features that were absent from the film's barebones 1998 DVD release. These include:

Introduction and Audio Commentary from Director Guillermo del Toro
Reclaiming Mimic- Featurette with Del Toro discussing his vision for the film and how he completed the new version.
A Leap in Evolution: The Creatures of Mimic- Featurette looking at the creatures in Mimic
Back into the Tunnels: Shooting Mimic- Behind the scenes featurette.
Deleted/Alternate Scenes
Outtakes
Gag Reel
Storyboard Animatics

Bring it on! I'm so thankful that he was able to do this with all the stuff he has on his plate. He obviously cares about his art and his fans. It's time for him to direct a new film.

Agreed, it sounds so *sick* to hear and behold! incredible that its happened at all, cos not most finished films have another chance at having a special edition or director's cut! Nice to know that Guillermo del Toro rise and stature in hollywood has gotten him far enough so he can achieve all of this years later, as i said other director's aren't so fortunate themselves to do the same etc.

Purchased the "Mimic: The Director's Cut" and "Blood Simple" Blu-Rays on Sept. 6th from Best Buy.

First off, I had a difficult time recognizing the additions in "Mimic", although it's been a few years since the last time I viewed it. Anyone looking for significant changes will be sorely disappointed- there is no change to the ending whatsoever. There appears to be some changes to the color schemes involving some scenes (as is the norm with Del Toro's other films)- here, there's quite a bit of golden/amber hued and blue saturated scenes. Furthermore, the film has been absolutely drenched in darkness- mostly to a fault. I would also go as far as to say that the picture quality is very disappointing- there are large amounts of grain in many scenes and detail is shaky at best. I watched the "Blood Simple' Blu-Ray shortly after that and the experience made the "Mimic" BR look that much worse- the Coen Bros film, from 1985, is also a dark film by nature yet looks 10 times better as far as clarity and detail is concerned. It blows the "Mimic" BR, a film made in 1997, out of the water.

I'm a big fan of Del Toro's, so I felt the timing and quality of this release is particularly bad- MGM giving him the runaround on "The Hobbit" films, losing "At The Mountains of Madness" (which I was very much looking forward to)and the lackluster productions of "Splice" and "Don't Be Afraid of The Dark" (I feel the latter film features Del Toro's worst screenplay) have left him in the Horse Latitudes, so to speak. I hope "Pacific Rim" is excellent, yet there's about a 100 other projects I wish he could tackle before it...

Too bad there aren't more Directors like him.

I thought del Toro had disowned the film...

For those who still want the theatrical version blu-ray, here it is: http://www.amazon.com/MIMIC/dp/B002TSNG8O

Well I saw the director's cut, unfortunately I'm really not sure what was removed or added - I was a kid when I last saw it. Presumably Movie-Censorship.com will do a full report once they get a hold of the new cut.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

Got this little overlooked gem on blu ray and watched it last night. Looks and sounds great. It took me a little while to realize what was added, but the feature on the disc called "Reclaiming Mimic" goes into some detail and addresses some of the added scenes. Not really anything major, but it does flesh the story out a little more, from what I remember of the theatrical version.

Amazon has the blu ray on sale for $9.99, by the way...great price!

Just picked up the blu ray, watched it tonight. Far better than I remember back in 97.

Del Toro's commentary explained that he orginally wanted a different ending but the studio wouldn't allow it. Makes me wonder how many average movies could have been great if the studio just allowed the director a bit more freedom.

Mimic could have been an amazing film instead of just a well done monster movie.

Mwuhahahahhaaa!
