Replace Rappaport with Jackie Chan, this could have saved Eddie's career

The plot of a wise-cracking city cop is very similar to Rush Hour a few years later. If only Jackie had had the idea to launch his career in America a little earlier, he and Eddie could have teamed up and added some bounce and created a blockbuster to what otherwise becomes a standard police thriller. Michael Rappaport is just sort of lifeless; with Chan, Eddie could have done the cross-cultural humor that Chris Tucker did in RH (and since Tucker is basically just Eddie's act slightly sped up, it makes even more sense).

@Binkconn Replace Rappaport with Jackie Chan, and Eddie Murphy's no longer the major star, and I don't think he would've allowed that.

If Eddie Murphy had been offered Rush Hour, I think he would've turned it down.
