Why would Millard hire Bentley to kidnap the children? I don't get it.

Am I the only one that thinks it odd that, at the school, it's fairly dark and in fact it seems to be night, but after the 'chase' through the tunnels, Ozzie, his sister and his friend come out of a sewerage drain in the middle of a city area in complete sunshine?? I realise it could have been possible for it to be stormy at the school, but that dark?? I think not.
