In my opinion the whole site b thing is a load of rubbish. I very much doubt a 2nd island was even thought of when chrichton writing the first novel, it just seems tacked on and an excuse to write a 2nd book. The first island got destroyed (including the dinos) in the novel and would have been pretty much inhospitable and also pointless to return because there would be bo dinos left to write about. Therefore chrichton had no choice but to make up another island as speilberg had already got the go ahead on the 2nd film once the novel was published.... Therefore it doesnt make sense that the 2nd island was there to breed the dinos because that was what the first island was doing. It just doesnt make sense.
After the success of
Jurassic Park (the film), Spielberg and
Universal asked Michael Crichton to write a second novel for them to base a sequel on.
Crichton had never before written a sequel to any of his books, and had to find a solution to resurrect the dinosaurs and have an acceptable explanation for them still being around, but hidden, despite the destruction of Isla Nublar in the first book. (The film is left open ended.)
This is how he conceived "Site B" on Isla Sorna. There never was supposed to be more than one island, and the second novel does contradict some information from the first. With Malcolm back amongst the living,
The Lost World became a hybrid between a sequel to the first novel and a sequel to the first film.
As for Isla Nublar; I wrote a lengthy piece about it. If you're interested, you can find it through the link below:
