Right after the bullies put sugar in Trent's lawnmower. Trent wanted to seek some sort of revenge. So, right after Devon and him visited his dying father... they ran into Shadow the dog. Trent knew it was the bully's dog so he chases after it. It is debateable if Trent ran over the dog on purpose or not, but he hit the dog with his truck. The dog was already sufferring a lot so he decided he should just whack it. Traumatizing Devon in the process.

Devon ran from Trent and now thought of Trent as her "villain" in her own fairy tale. When her parents asked her what happened, she told them Trent killed the dog. Then she goes on about how close they were and she did not think he'll ever do that to her. So her parents thought something was awry about their relationship. Devon even revealed that Trent touched her scar and she touched his too.

The sheriff, the dad and Sean (bully/owns Shadow) all came running down to Trent's trailer bringing Devon with them. She saw them beating Trent badly to no end. But right when he was already bathing in his own blood. Devon came in and shot Sean in the gut using her dad's gun. Her dad pleads with her. She does not listen. Trent escapes. Trent asks where is he going to go... where is home...

and she says, "Home is in my hands."

She gives him the comb and the towel just like the Baba Yaga story. And in the end Trent finally saw what Devon saw. His imagination crossing in with hers. It had a fantasy ending with the seas flooding in so that Trent could escape and the trees growing every where just like Devon's fairy tale.

Devon climbs up the tree that was filled with red ribbons as she sits there quietly. As it all sunk in. She tells the Baba Yaga story once more with Trent escaping the evil forest.

It was a real sad ending. No explaination/interpreation can justify the beauty of it,imho.

Watch it again.

No detailed description could ever compensate for the visual ending to this movie.
