It's not set in Hyboria. It is set in Valusia based on Howard's Kull short stories, like "By this Axe I Rule!"

Imagine that.
According to REH's essay "The Hyborian Age" the Hyborian domination of Europe began several thousand years after the fall of Atlantis.
Kull being an Atlantean, this is set before the Hyborian Age, and technically a pre-qual to the Conan stories.
In fact, Cimmerians, such as Conan, are the decendents of Atlanteans, so Kull and Conan were actually kins-men.
That is probably why some people got the idea that Conan is Kulls son/desendent.
Of course those people would have to be idiots, for Howard EXPLICITLY says in a number of places the Cimmerians were the descendants of the Atlanteans ONLY AFTER the Atlanteans had become ape-men then reevolved into humans.
