Blaming accuracy on the gun mount

I'm no gun expert, but I've been with a friend who zeroes his guns at a range.

I do find The Jackal's blaming Jack Black's character for producing a gun mount that isn't accurate. Shouldn't he just have zeroed the camera-gun-sight so that the bullet hits dead center. That's how gunsights are adjusted, you don't compensate by adjusting your hands do you?

might it not be a gps thing probably a script ploy

Dear Radbasa,

I also noticed the inconclusive, half-assed way this scene was handled. Mounting sights/camera lenses on a large calibre weapon would be a meticulous process, as our lethal Jackal surely knew. But these procedures were time-consuming and not necessary to making this scene work, from a cinematic point of view.

Years ago, I built up a high quality, powerful hunting rifle (Winchester .300 Magnum), which utilized a telescopic sight. The first thing I did was "boresight" the rifle, which I did at a pistol range. This was the preliminary alignment of the barrel with the line of vision from the telescopic sight. I oriented the weapon so that it pointed downrange to the bullseye on a paper target @ 15 yards distant. How? I removed the bolt and sighted downrage through the barrel. Second, I adjusted the telescopic sight so that it bore on the same target. Next step was to go to a rifle range and complete the calibrations at known distances. That led to final adjustments. It worked for me.

I did it this way because of my Army training in boresighting the main cannon with the optics on a tank. When I showed up at the pistol range with a large hunting rifle, it caused quite a stir among the 'gun people' there. I quickly explained what I wanted to do; the management was quite cooperative, once they understood what I had in mind.

BTW, I never went hunting. Firing the weapon made my beloved dog lose his hearing for a couple of days. That would not do! I got rid of the rifle.

you should have bought a supressor and some subsonic rounds.

A 300 mag made people raise an eyebrow? That's some lame gun club, mate.

Firstly, you don't know where the poster lives. Just because it is possibly legal and regular to walk around with a high powered rifle where you are doesn't mean it is where he lives.

Secondly, he stated that he turned up to a PISTOL club... so no doubt it was 'wtf are you doing here with THAT?' - the same as if you turned up with a set of golf clubs to a football field.

I really appreciated this movie as an "updated" version of the original. But, the original rules. Regarding the accuracy of the gun mount...this whole complicated "contraption" cost our new Jackal a ton of money. What an inaccurate cinematic joke. With the first shot, any sniper/assassin would have fallen over dead laughing at the "it's off by 'x' millimeters" b.s. At the range the Jackal was shooting (maybe 150 yards)...he could have bought an off-the shelf Ruger, Winchester or Remington rifle that would have performed in a much better fashion. I mean, c'mon guys...the "sniper/assassin" is targeting a pumpkin...maybe 150 yards...with this Rube Goldberg electronic/digital contraption that finds his first shot from a cold barrel off by enough that he not only misses the pumpkin...he "kills" a tree standing FEET, not inches away!!! What a laugh!!!

The inherent innacuracy of this scene should be apparent to any gun-savvy viewer upon watching the first few seconds. There sits the "gun"...covered in a canvas tarp...(it was obviously unloaded, assembled, etc., by our Willis character...yet Willis eventually "unveils" this Weapon of Missed Destruction to the great surprise of the Jack Black character!!! Why was LaMont so surprised to see the weapon?? Didn't he have to watch The Jackal remove it from the truck, assemble it, set it up, "sight" it, etc., etc., etc...??
Continuity people...step up, please!!

Good movie for 15 year-olds who need to join a shooting/hunting club to learn about weapons...bad movie anyone who knows anything about firearms.

I seem to remember that it wasn't off at all. It was a 'tricky' ploy to get Jack Black's character to act like a doofus and actually step out where he could easily be shot.

reply

But thats retarded. He could have killed him while he was watching. Remember? He spun the gun around and pointed it at him.

look at how he killed Valentina, drawing a heart of blood on her face

actually, i think it was the bullet he shot her with that actually killed her...

Damon: Boasting about being at law school is...really quite embarrassingly childish.

Plain english is valued in law, you will find. It is much more important for a lawyer to be precise and concise than to sound...intellectual.

Bullets OR guns have never killed anybody. the ONLY reason for death is lack of oxygen to the brain.

I share his opinion, it's obvious you put some extra energy in there just to appear extra intelligent.
Not everyone here speaks english as their native language, like me for example.
Out of pure compassion maybe you can convey your message in a normal manner, I mean isn't that what posting is all about, conveying a message. Wouldn't it be best if as many as possible understand it.
You tone down the lawyer in you and I'll refrain from speaking swedish with you.

Actually it wasn't. Had it been Jackal would have hit the pack of cigarettes. He even said it was off after the cigarette shot.

The fact of the matter is that the optics line up with the barrel of the gun to determine how accurate of a shot the shooter gets off. The automated mounting has nothing to do with it.
