Why did the Jackal pick up the gay guy?
I know it wasn't just to kill him. Was the Jackal gay and was picking him up or was he pretending to be gay? If it's the latter, then why?

Yeah, the Sly Stallone movie Nighthawks did this gambit in the 1980's.
Only it was a terrorist using a stewardess' apartment. He also killed her.

Couldn't he have shacked up with some hot chick?
shareIt was a nod to the Forsyth book and also to the 1973 film. In the book, the Jackal picks up a homosexual in Paris and then puts on some make-up. The police are looking for him after he has murdered a baroness, but a police private waves him and his temporary companion through a checkpoint with some disgust. The sergeant tells him he should have checked his papers but the private responds that they are looking for a man who screwed a baroness and then murdered her, not for some homosexual. So in the book, the disguise is effective.
If everything that is known about the Jackal, which is not much, is that he is heterosexual, then posing as a gay man is just another and rather effective disguise.

There were quite a few deviations, mainly in order to make more noise and explosions. In the original film the Jackal kills the forger by breaking his neck after the latter tries to blackmail him. In the analogous scene here, Jack Black's character is torn apart by automatic gun fire. The same automatic gun takes the place of the rather understated sniper's rifle in the original.
