I woke up in the middle of the day. Or did I?

IMDb user Jennifer Keenan wrote in her comment to Insomnia that "I never knew light could be so disturbing". After spending a week or so in Vadsø, a small town far north in Norway and close to the russian border, I truly can relate to some aspects of Skarsgaard's character. The midnight sun is a beautiful thing, but also confusing, irritating and capable of driving any human beeing completly mad. I firmly believe that it's unhealthy to live in the northern parts of Norway during summer as well as winter when it's no sun at all for a couple of months. So, they should make a sequel to Insomnia, set in Tromsø, but during winter and call it somthing like "Where's the sun? I'm losing my mind!".

Well as someone who has half his family in those northern parts of Norway, I can honestly say that you will rarely find a place where the people are more serene and seem to be more at peace with themselves. If you want to see people going mad visit cities like Oslo, Stockholm, London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc =P

Nah... resigned to their fate? =) These parts of Europe isn't like Siberia :P

Besides, Tromsø, the town where "Insomnia" takes place has about 60,000 inhabitants and has been called "the Paris of Northern Europe". Many people who come from the south, from bigger cities, end up loosing their heart to the town so it isn't as bad as one might think. And the midnight sun, you get used to that the first summer. And the winter? Get your first look at the "northern lights" (aurora borealis) and you might loose your heart completely for the place. I don't live in those parts but I have no problem understanding people who love it there. You have all the luxuries of the modern world, broadband/DSL internet, satelite tv, Burger King (:P) but you also get the added value of living more in touch with nature, connecting with the Earth in a different way.

I love when people mentions Oslo in the same sentence as "Stockholm, London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc".

I've been living in the northern part of Norway my whole life (hey, I'm only 20) and it may seem strage but I really couldn't imagine being anywhere else dureing the months we have the midnight sun. there's just something about the energy and the people. where else can a girl go for a walk alone in the middle of the night without being raped and slaughterd?
And I also wouldn't consider living up here extreme. it's mostly just regular smaller towns that have shorter days (sunny for about 4-6 hours a day) and a lot of snow during the winter, and the midnight sun during the summer.

psht! I live in Chicago, and right now, its been so cloudy and snowy, I havent seen the sun in a week. We think thats the culprit for why I feel like I want to nap all the time, dispite the fact I get a full nights sleep. My boyfriend, just last weekend, slept till 5pm, because it looks like predawn all day long.

You dont even have to go above the arctic circle to go nuts when you can't rely on the sun.

The original Insomnia is a very good movie. Those Norwegians know how to tell a good story on film. I lived in St. Petersburg for a while and the bright nights did bother me for a while but then I got used to them and just slept during the day.
P.S People can go nuts anywhere, they are inherently "nutty"

Midnight sun is incredible. I've only seen it in St. Petersburg, where its not true 24 hour sun..the sky is darkish for a few hours from around 3-6 am. But the energy of the usually grumpy and unfriendly Russians is incredible. So much fun, the city is a non-stop party. Hope to see it in Norway one day!
