Happy Endings All Around OK
I was amazed how good and how funny this film was! Not flawless, but extremely well done as a coming-out fantasy. Joan Cusak was terrific. Just good-looking enough, and full of repressed frustration and later pathetic rage over being left at the alter after waiting 3 yrs. for Kline to 'be ready.'
Kline was superb! Has he ever given a bad performance? He had the character nailed right from the beginning with his expressions, body language, and posture. Right on the edge so you really didn't know if he was or wasn't. Any more than he supposedly did.
His lack of awareness of his sexual preference was of course the key unrealistic point, and therefore weak link, in an otherwise funny and sunny film. Yet, his unawareness was the crux of the plot. Supposedly there are men who get to be 65 and 'discover' they're gay. So perhaps it's feasible that at ?30? his character really doesn't know and hasn't had any gay experiences.
Matt Dillon's Oscar sequence was very funny for its vapidity. Hollywood was definitely being dissed. Loved the fantasy aspect of him getting stuck on Cusak's character after Kline dumps her. Everybody had someone devoted to them by the end. Selleck showed that he remains gorgeous and virile despite pushing 50. And he looks good without the heavy mustache! He was no Olivier here, but his role was limited. His character wasn't flamboyant or pathetic. Just a standard media type who's gay. I could see his character of restrained gayness appealing to Kline's newbie-found persona.
Good feel-good film w/excellent performances and some genuinely funny and touching moments. Parents w/teens and older children could easily see this film w/their kids. Not only would you not be grossed out, you would see that not everyone knows or wants to know their true sexual preference, and that families and communities can appreciate and be loyal to those who are different.
