funnier and less agenda driven than the birdcage
Both came out around the same time and were touted as the 2 gay themed movies that were aimed at mass audiences, so I always lump them together...
I think the Birdcage is a good and often very funny film, with a wonderfully nuanced performance by Robin Williams, and I know that it got the better reviews upon its release, but it had this self-important/liberal agenda tone that bothered me (see "The American President"). And Nathan Lane also just irritated me to no end, as he usually does.
Whereas this movie was just FUNNY. Sidesplitting at times (the masculinity tape? I don't think I have ever laughed so hard). It was smart, with a sharp screenplay, but it didn't fall into the trap of taking itself too seriously. Kevin Kline was sublime as usual, and the supporting cast could not have been better.
So who else agrees??
