Steve Martin
Did Kevin Kline channel Steve Martin to play this part? Was Steve offered the role first?

That never occurred to me before, but now that you mention it, I can see your point. I could easily picture Martin in this role (though I probably would have liked the movie less, as I'm more of a Kline fan than a Martin fan). Before this movie, Kline used to play weird, manic sorts of characters, and here he's more of an insecure everyman, which is Martin's specialty. Martin's characters also tend to be slightly prissy (though not in a stereotypically gay sense), which would fit this role as well.
shareThanks for backing me up. There are many scenes where the persnickety leading man could easily be played by Steve. I saw this in the theatre and it didn't hit me until recently when I saw it on cable.

i just watched this tonight and the whole time i kept thinking the same thing. and it isnt just the mannerisms of the character, it is the voice!
shareIn this interview with Pauline Kael, she says that Martin turned down the role (wisely in her opinion).

Glad I am not the only one who caught this.
