Just this, why Howard was so scared?

Simmons creeps me out. Howard was afraid that he might be attracted if he looked - or that's how people saw him.

Because he was looking at Simmons on the TV screen while getting aroused and thought, "Oh, crap! I don't want to be thinking of that gay guy while I'm making love to Joan!"
