Gene Siskel's favourite movie of 1997.

Famed film critic Gene Siskel for the Chicago Tribune and co-host of At The Movies, called this the best movie of the year; beating out Titanic, As Good As It Gets, The Sweet Hereafter, LA Confidential, The Full Monty, Good Will Hunting, Starship Troopers, Boogie Nights, Face/Off, The Game, Jackie Brown, Scream 2, Con Air, Donnie Brasco, Cop Land, Austin Powers, Wag The Dog and Air Force One. I personally would not rank it number 1, but defiantly in my top 10.

Yieks,if I'd been asked , back in 1997, I don't think I would have given this movie a higher rating than Titanic, or Sweet Hereafter, or LA Confidental, or Good Will hunting , or Boogie nights nor Full Monty!
Beegadz, I'm truly amazed that Siskel rated this movie higher~!

Don't get me wrong. I really did liked this movie. But the other movies in direct competition were pretty darn amazing too.

Mine also

Definitely a no-brainer. It's easily better than ANY of those films listed. Maybe The Game comes close, but that's the only one.

Defiantly, or definitely?

LA Condential is #1 IMO but Ice Storm is a close second.

Cool.

Have to seriously question listing things like Austin Powers / Scream 2 / Con Air / Face/Off / Donnie Brasco etc. in a tops list. Is there a joke I'm missing? 1997 was a good year for movies - just not necessarily these movies. (see also '99 and '07)

I love Starship Troopers and Jackie Brown, but they're not in the same league either. Same with Wag the Dog. These are a 7.5-8.0 for me.

For my money The Ice Storm would be #1. LA Confidential, maybe Boogie Nights as runner-up. Honorable mentions to As Good As It Gets, Titanic.

Not saying those were better than The Ice Storm, I'm just pointing out how such an unknown film can wind up so high.

Let’s start by saying the movie deserves more than zero Oscar nominations. I think that’s a fair statement, even though it had tough competition from great films like Boogie Nights and L.A. Confidential.
