....and I was very shocked by the ending!! I couldn't tell you which is better...the film or the book, I liked both! Obviously the film lacks on detail that the book has. I was so surprised at how many sex scenes there are in the book because I had seen the movie first and there wasn't anything like that in the movie. If you like the film I do recommend reading the book!!
I haven't read the book yet, but having just watched the movie again, I'd like to ask if in the book, at the end, does she actually ask him if they could go for "one last ride"? and did she drive away after asking that, as he's saddling up to go on that last ride? I guess what I'm saying is, I don't understand why she would ask something like that then just leave right after. What did I miss? What am I not getting from that last scene in the movie?
She asked if they could go for one last to ride to send him away and distract him because she knew she couldn't say goodbye and I think neither could he so it was the easiest way to cut ties and get the parting over and done With
At he end when she asked, "Can we have one last ride?" I had the definite impression she didn't mean horses. Seconded when she drove off as he was saddling up.
In the book there was a lot more focus on how Pilgrim should have been put down and the producers actually did a good job in the scene where the veterinary hospital workers go into the culvert to get a horribly injured Pilgrim. Still, it's impossible for a movie to go into the kind of detail that a book can.
HW is a beautiful-looking film with some beautiful images of outdoor scenery and it is definitely worthwhile for the scene where Grace reunites with Pilgrim, which always makes me cry.
