Is this movie widescreen?

I just recently got my copy of this movie on DVD, and I notice that the screen format for it is 4:3 and not either original theatrical letterbox widescreen-1:1.85 or TV widescreen-16:9.

Wasn't this movie ever in movie theatres, in widescreen format?

My DVD is a UK / European release, which I got from:

so I'm wondering if that's got anything to do with it.

Does anyone know anything more about this?

P.S: I had a look on both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk for these DVDs and checked out the technical spec.s for both.
The .com version says it's widescreen anamorphic and the .co.uk version says it's 4:3 fullframe. Why the hell did they do this? Why would anyone crop a widescreen movie into 4:3 for a DVD release in this day and age?
