Since this largely-hyped (and subsequently) anti-climactic release tanked. Does that mean that Eastman and co. are going 'back to the drawing board?'
Certainly it would be in Columbia's best interest to keep the Heavy Metal franchise alive and do a R-rated theatrical release. The only thing that washed the bad taste out of my mouth after watching Heavy Metal 2000 (FAKK2) was the fact the vastly superior Animatrix VHS/DVD managed to blow me away more than even the original Heavy Metal movie. Watching Animatrix alone proved there's still a lot of ground to be covered in the animated adult sci-fi genre. On the rare possibility anyone from the Heavy Metal Camp is reading this. Please try again with a third release!
C'mon, how hard is it to round up a few animators worldwide for another try? or perhaps we need Joel Silver to co-ordinate.
Well, I guess I better check out Animatrix. Its very frustrating, nobody I know has any interest in these kind of movies. Which is why I spend a lot of time here. The girl of your nightmares
It would help if they would try making a HM movie during a good year for metal as opposed to one of it's all time low points, unlike the two existing HM movies.
I would have to disagree, HM2k was way better than Animatrix. HM2k stuck true to it's roots ( did you ever read the mag), with a good (classic) story line. if you are looking for "cool" "neat' visuals. sure Animatrix is better, but not entertaining.
I concur..... if theres going to be a third HM (and i'm hoping there will be) i'd like to see even more sex and even more violence. I think HM stands alone in an untaped genre.
- And The Animatrix was horrible besides the very first mini feature in C.G.
Heavy Metal 1 is far superior to the Animatrix imo. I think it is one of the most underated movies ever for people who appreciate animation. I guess it depends on what kind of animation you like but I am a big fan of the classic animation style. The new style is great too as long as it's is not primarily cgi. Titan AE is acceptable to me, but I hate the completely cgi movies.
Yes! More sex and violence! Since those are the main treats of Heavy Metal, let's go all the way. And I think that the structure of many different short stories was better than just one long story, because even if you wouldn't like one story, you could enjoy some other. So let's hope they do a third one like the first one, but with good R-rated stuff and good dialogue and quality voice actors this time (OK, they had Michael Ironside on HM2000).
For me, Heavy Metal 2000 was not nearly as good as the first one. Animation looked actually lot worse compaired to the first one, as considered how fast and low-budget the original was, and done about thousand years ago, too. Voice actors were bad through-out, even Michael Ironside (I don't think it's because they would be bad actors, but because of bad directing). CGI was just complete waste of effort most of the time (not included the "hyperspace" secion, that looked quite classy). And the whole style the characters were animated... it just didn't feel as rich and cool and detailed as the original Heavy Metal. Althought the movie had it's funny moments, all the action and sex felt somehow poor.
What about a live action Heavy Metal movie? I know it propably won't happen because of the high cost all the various sets and costumes and make-ups would cost that a good Heavy Metal film would require, but somehow the idea intrigues me anyhow. What do you think?
For the closest experience to a live version of Heavy Metal check out BattelQueen 2020. I haven't seen the whole thing, but it definately has that type of feel to it. The Fifth Element always reminded me of the cab segment with less sex.
Bah! Heavy Metal could never be live action! That would be defeating the whole purpose, and it would be the opposite of what we'd want to see in an HM movie anyway. It would be like a Jackie Chan movie without the stuntwork. No wait, they already did that . . .
Anyway, as far as spiritual successors go, I think Sin City was a noble effort.
This just in...good news!! David Fincher will helm a third installment. I was very dissappointed in the original 1981 feature, and didn't even bother seeing the 2000 one. This new project looks like it might be something special...
Yeah, it was on the ScFy CH and it was live action non sequential and it SUCKED and was cancelled... K. Eastman was the worst thing to happen to Heavy Metal...The Mag and Franchise.
