director's cut?

any chance of a director's cut being released ever? you can tell there is a lot missing from the story and i would be interested to see how p.t. would have filled in the gaps if given the final cut.

Thats actually a very good question. P.T. Anderson is one of the most powerful directors in the biz and he could certainly release HIS version if he wanted to. My bet is that he simply moved on.

reply

Why do you say he is one of the most powerful directors in the biz? I know he has had a lot of critical acclaim but has he had the finacial success to have that kind of power?

reply

The cut you saw was the directors cut. The only thing in it he objected to in the final cut was the title cards in the begining, and the name. Other than that, the story unfolds exactly how he wanted it.

reply

PTA says this film was butchered by its producers.

reply

No he didn't.

In a half hour interview on IFC he said that the producers wanted to butcher this film but that he was able to keep his cut though unable to keep his title for the movie.

reply

Here's the deal:

The producers did take the film away from PTA and drasitically recut it. However, when it began to get accepted into festivals, PTA sent his cut. After the huge amount of critical acclaim, the producers were essentially strong-armed into releasing PTA's cut.

reply

Go PTA.

thats pretty much it, its worth reading" rebels on the backlot" for more info on this film and how it was made.and PTA in general

Last seen film:
The French Connection (1971) by William Friedkin 9/10

The screenplay (which I received a copy of from Hollywood Book City.com (20 bucks inc. ship/hand!), reveals many a deleted scene including a totally different final end scene! It's nevertheless as long as the film itself without end credits would be/is!?!

Great script, great film. Director's cut...We have it!

reply

nearly but not the whole truth

The producers (Rysher Entertainment) were haveing a mere over the fact that, what PTA had shot wasn't in the script he told them that they should read the script because everything he had shot was in the script, they took the film away from him with the intent to recut it. As he was leaveing he took a a workprint of the film with him and begain submitting it into festivals, once he got it in to a few and started getting positive reations to it, the producers (Rysher Entertainment) relented and released his cut of the film.
