Finished watching this movie last night after purchasing PTA's Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love and Hard 8 on DVD. It was an enjoyable film and the characters were fantastic. Just a question. Do you think Sydney was following John because he wanted to redeem himself due to the past or was it pure coincidence he met him outside the diner?

sharehis approach to john seemed very premeditated and he didn't ask him his full name (did he?) or react as if he didn't know before that he was his son, so i think that he was following him.
shareMaybe Sydney heard about John's mother death. So since he'd killed the young man's father, he realized John was an orphan. So he hung around waiting for his chance to "make amends" for the fatherless young man.
