what happens at the end?

Please don't read this thread if you've not seen the movie!

At the end of the movie, in the last scene, Sydney is alone in a restaurant and the camera zooms on his left arm. We're supposed to see something, and then he puts his jacket a little bit up so that the thing to see is hidden.

What was that thing to see? My girl-friend and me just missed it (small tv + baby crying). We are left with a sense of 'something's missing'.

If you know what is to be seen, please put it there!

You weren't meant to see any more than you did. Sydney sees the blood stain on his wrist, takes a moment to think about what he's done and then covers it up. I believe the theme of the movie to be about putting the past behind you. Maybe it doesn't always make up for what you've done, but you've done it none the less. Sydney's actions have helped the few people out there that he loves. I think he's trying to keep his mind on that, not the stains left from his past.

....hope I helped you out.

I thought that the message of this movie, and the symbolism of Sydney's last action was "you can get away with murder, as long as you cover it up very carefully".

I took the gesture of looking at then hiding the blood stained cuff as regret that he's getting sloppy in his old age. Maybe in the old days, Sydney would have been too smooth and professional to let something like that spot happen. Or at least he would have noticed it before he got into the diner, but now he's slipping.

If I had a stain on my cuff, i'd try and cover it up. ..next question.

Wow, some great explanations in this thread. I personally do not try to look too hard into a movie I just watch and enjoy. Unless it is a crappy film.
