this was a GREAT movie UNTIL...

Sydney went to the apartment and they had the "john" on the bed. Then it went downhill with too many plots and drama. It was great when it was Sydney teaching Reilly the ropes. Should have stayed that way. The film hit a hard wall when it got too complicated.

...but the intention from the start was to create intrigue around the character of Sydney. If it misled you, then it certainly wasn't because it was unfocused. Sydney showing John the ropes was only a very small part of the story, and once that 2 year jump happens, it's pretty clear that that's not what the movie's really about. It's about what Sydney's intentions have been all along, and the way we discover them via Jimmy, and finally, how Sydney covers them up again. When you really look at the big picture, it's not that complicated. The motel scene is the only scene with any real "drama," or at least in the way you mean it, and it's only there because Sydney's there having to deal with it. The relationship between John and Clementine is a McGuffin.

makes me wonder if it was even re-written by producers or such a la Dune, CB4 etc.
It takes on a totally different character and kind of gets boring.

Haha, that scene made things too "complicated"? Are you serious? Are you that dumb that a scene that contains no twists or anything that would constitute making a movie "complicated" had you scrambling?

In retrospect, I believe the film would have been stronger in a whole simply if in the beginning John was looking for money to bury his father rather than his mother. Then when we find out that John's father was dead half way through the movie it wouldnt not feel like something that just came out of nowhere...i dont know

But the movie is about Sydney trying to make amends for some of the things he has done in the past. That kind of resolve only comes with years of simmering regret over past misdeeds. I don't think it would ring true if Sydney had just killed John's father in the past few days and then immediately befriends John to make up for it. Sydney has been living with his past for a long, long time and has come to the determination that he must redeem himself in some small way.

The intrigue of what Sydney's motive is are what held the thing together. I thought it was going to be a gambling scam similar to MONEY PLAYS with Roy Scheider. But then when we learn what he's about it's let down. And it left me thinking ,is that it? I should have had that early night.
