whats with the two titles (sydney + hard eight)?

i dont get it. what is the TITLE OF THIS FILM?? IMDB says sydney. netflix says hard eight. the video box says hard eight. the filmmaker says sydney. what is the OFFICIAL name of this movie?!

reply

"Hard Eight" is the official title of the film. P.T. Anderson's original title was "Sydney". However, the studio that released the film retitled it "Hard Eight", for whatever reasons they had. Because this was Anderson's first feature film - and he didn't have any creative control - the "Hard Eight" became the official title of the film.

The studio thought "Sydney" made it sound like it took place in Australia. I think that's dumb, but I do prefer the title "Hard Eight."

If I heard a movie called Sydney and didn't know anything else about it, I'd think it had something to do with Australia. The studio was not outrageously off the mark there.

Of course, Hard 8 sounds like the porno version of 8 1/2. I like both titles.

Yeah. So basically, the studio couldn't win if they chose only between Sydney or Hard 8. There are issues with both titles.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Hard Eight is much better, it has a casino reference (the setting is important) and also it sounds like heartache, which is cool.

Issue? Yeah, marketing issues... And I don't know why you'd sympathize with that type of thing unless you work in the industry. What the title makes the movie seem like it's going to be about is irrelevant. Sydney is the name of the main character. Once you know that, the title is perfect because this movie is A CHARACTER STUDY. That was no doubt the logic behind Anderson's title. When you go in expecting that, you'll most likely be satisfied with what the movie has to offer. The title "Hard Eight" only gets people's asses into the seats, but they most likely expect a legitimate crime drama from it or something like Martin Scorsese's "Casino".

So, no, there really aren't issues (or at least issues for the viewer -- y'know, the person who actually matters when it comes to making a movie) with both titles. And if the studio was smart, they would have realized that the movie wasn't exactly blockbuster, attention-grabbing material in the first place and it wouldn't matter what they called it, so "Sydney" would have been perfectly fine.

The title should have been "My Darling Clementine." That's a good title for a movie.
