Sydney's free room comp technique

Just out of curiosity, has anyone actually tried to get a room (or any other Vegas comp) by using Sydney's technique?

Since I hardly spend any time in casinos, I'm not too familiar with how all the complimentary things really work out there. I thought it was pretty interesting to watch on screen, and wondered if people really do these kind of things.

Apparently, in the early 1990's, casinos were relatively low-tech: the casinos simply recorded the amount of gambling tokens you purchased to the database account associated with the rate card. This allowed John to repeatedly purchase the tokens, presenting the cashier with the rate card, and then cash the tokens in later and repeat, getting credit each time on the rate card. As Sydney instructed him, between purchasing the tokens and redeeming them, he simply sat at a slot machine pretending to gamble and only had to actually drop a token into a machine when the casino floor walker approached. If you've been to a casino in the last 10 years, you know that now you insert your rate card into the slot machine when you sit down and you feed the slot cash (no tokens) or winning tickets you've previously cashed out, and the card database now keeps track of the actual amount you spend.
So, no, it is no longer possible to use that exact scam in casinos.

I love how this was started at 2003 and it was on top of threads at this board when I checked this place out. I would imagine that this scheme is easy to come up with and that lot of people did try it back on the day but also casino security was aware of it. Its not really majorly impressive scam, because what is the point really, you are just getting a room, you are not even making any money. Useful for bum and homeless type of people but security would be aware that those kind of people would be trying this. If you are just normal looking and you would do this couple of times, I dont think anyone would care too much.
