Magnolia reference! (hear me out) POSSIBLE SPOILERS

When Samuel L. Jackson's character is mentioning that Sydney used to be a hard-ass and was involved with people in Atlantic City, he mentions a list of people that were there, and one of the names he says is Jimmy Gator! Jimmy Gator is the name of Philip Baker Hall's character in Magnolia. I'm wondering if PTA just coincidentally used that name for his character in Magnolia, or was referencing Hard Eight! Listen to Jackson's whole rant again and you'll catch it.

Not only that, but one of the other names he mentioned is Floyd Gondolli, the name of the character that Philip Baker Hall plays in Boogie Nights. The third name was what, Mumbles O'Malley? It's hard to picture Philip Baker Hall playing a character named "Mumbles," though I see that Philip Baker Hall is rumored to be playing "Doctor" in P.T. Anderson's untitled project. Paging Dr. O'Malley?

many writers use the same names just because the names sound good, not necessarily referring to the same characters exactly.

If anything those names in Magnolia would be a HARD EIGHT reference.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

I'm almost certain that the "mumbles" reference its referring to Dustin hoffmans character "mumbles" in the film Dick Tracy.

Phillip Baker hall plays a guy called "Sydney" in the movie "Midnight run".

PTA has said that he was obsessed with MIDNIGHT RUN when he first saw it as a young man.
