PSH playing craps

Anyone have a link to the video of Philip Seymour Hoffman's scene at the craps table with the "OLD TIMER"!

So memorable..

Nobody has a link to this scene?

Too bad.

PSH saying "Sister Sledge" in that scene gets to me everytime. it's hilarious! I love it. you should listen to P.T. Anderson on the film's commentary on how he fell in love with such a brilliant actor like PSH.

here's the link to the scene

Hoffman is awesome and hilarious in this. Definitely one of the best parts of the movie

I too, felt that scene was the highlite of the movie... I'm not even sure i understand the point of it... maybe just to illustrate how calm and collected Sydney can be in the face of adversity.... but such an entertaining little part. i was hoping they were introducing PSH as a character present in the remainder of the film (which would've lofted the film's overall status), but alas, it was his only scene.

But he wasn't really all that calm, cool and collected. True he didn't react in an outburst but PSH's antics induced him into making a ridiculous gamble, as if to show PSH's character up a little bit. Its also a small allegory, one that mirrors the theme of the film, about the passing of time, the change in the way people act today vs yesteryear. And, in making that bet (which is the same bet that Samuel Jackson's character recalled as a story earlier in the day as a "ballsy move" or something like that) Sydney himself was harkening back to actions he made in his youth. Which is also a kind of foreshadowing - it won't be the only action that Sydney has to take that he hadn't done in a long while.

One wonders if any other actor has made so many vividly memorable acting gigs with so little screen time, with a similar consistency - not to mention the insane range - as PSH used to ("used to" because he´s pretty much been a leading man for some time)...? Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Happiness, The Talented Mr Ripley, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love... the list goes on.

'A great point, well said. I couldn't agree more. I just watched PSH's scene in Hard Eight and it was breathtaking. I will miss him, as so many will, for a very long time.

C'mon Yolanda, what's Fonzie like?

Hard Eight is streaming on Netflix. Just watched that scene. It is one of my favorites too.

I read about this film when I heard PSH had died. Thought maybe I had seen this before but I hadn't. I watched the whole movie knowing he was in it. When I saw this was the only scene, it reminded me of the old saying, "There are no small parts, only small actors." Phillip Seymour Hoffman will be a talent--and a man--sorely missed. May he rest in peace.

What I like about him in this scene is that in 3 minutes of screen time, he presents a very throw-away character as a fully fleshed-out person who actually goes through something. It's really a moment to highlight Sydney's character and how he responds to an evolving world in which he is an "old-timer" in a game played by many youthful idiots. But PSH embodies his frat boy douchebag with a noisy obnoxiousness at first and then we see him excited and challenged by Sydney's ballsy bet, and finally he's a little ashamed that he couldn't come through. Like he's taunting the guy at first, then appreciates the badass bet and tries to rise to it, but fails… and there's enough of his embarrassment/shame that creeps through the loud-guy facade by the end of the moment that the whole scene has much more purpose.

To me, that accomplishment in such a short amount of screen time is really good acting. Taking an otherwise side-character and investing him with a whole arc in 3 minutes time…

He had many other, better performances than this, but it is clear why PTA recognized his talent.

Spot on!

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.

Such was the genius of PSH. I`m just bloody infinitely depressed... it`s not FAIR, as he himself shouted in Before The Devil Knows You`re Dead.

"He can't do that! It's not *beep* fair!" Love that scene, and yes it does correlate with the tragic loss of this great man. R.I.P The Master.
