far and away PTA's worst film

and the fact that this film is really very impressive on many levels only goes to show what a cinematic force PTA is...

...where does it rank on your PTA list?

...mine...

- Magnolia (10)
- There Will Be Blood (10)

^^those two are as close to cinematic perfection as any film can really wish to be...

- Punch Drunk Love (in the area of a 9)
- Boogie Nights (8.7 ish)
- Sydney (7.8 ish...maybe a solid 8)

I think PTA's work has gotten better with each film:

1. There Will Be Blood- 10/10
2. Punch-Drunk Love- 10/10
3. Magnolia- 9/10
4. Boogie Nights- 8.5/10
5. Sydney/Hard Eight- 8.5/10 (like it just as much as BN, but BN is a greater achievement so it gets a rank higher)

Paul Thomas Anderson is easily my favorite director. How is it possible for every single one of a director's films to be either a masterpiece or at least a great film? At the rate he's going, I can't imagine how great "The Master" will be. I just hope he doesn't reach an "over-saturation" period. This guy is a directing god.

1. Punch Drunk Love. Hilarious, quirky, surreal, violent, romantic, schizophrenic, colorful, bright! So many adjectives yet none can quite explain just how PERFECT this film is to me. I love every single detail about this movie, and I'm pretty sure that summarizes it. 10/10

2. Hard Eight. I just recently watched this and I was blown away, I know it was nothing special really but that's what made it special (if that makes sense). PTA took an a-typical movie and added quaint little touches here and there to make it charming and it's just fantastic. 10/10

3. There Will Be Blood. The cinematography is beautiful and when I hear "Fratres for Cello and Piano" by Arvo Part... Movie magic! It's so dark and brooding to watch Plainview's life unfold, and it is probably PTL's most ambitious work yet. 10/10

4. Boogie Nights. This film's first half nearly made me shut it off, it was just not what I had come to expect. I've heard it was supposed to be a fun film and all but... I simply didn't like the first half because it just seemed so convoluted. But the second half of the movie is where the movie really shines and all of the characters come face to face with complex situations and it the film just explodes with intensity! I must admit though that the music was great and the ending was wonderful! 8/10

5. Magnolia. I bought this film on a limb, watched it once and was slightly moved, watched it again and was befuddled at why PTA fans drool over this film so much. It's just so generic and some of the acting is unbearably hammy. It is a good movie I suppose but it just isn't a GREAT movie. I really do enjoy the opening vignettes about fate, the weather interludes, John C. Riley and William H. Macy's characters, and the frogs falling from the sky but that is about all. I suppose I'm being too nit-picky but I really feel like PTA got a big head making this film. 6/10

Hard Eight is still a very good film and its well above the quality of most Hollywood films coming out these days. Its a great debut, however I think PTA has used this as a platform and has gone on to make even better films (like most great filmmakers do).

You mean...a "hard" eight?

I struggle with ranking Anderson's films. I find each of them so involving as I'm watching that it feels artificial and false to call one better than another. There Will Be Blood complicates this further, because even though it may be his masterpiece, it's the only film he's made that I can't sit down and watch at almost any time.

Magnolia is a bit unwieldy, but it's a sentimental favourite. I fell in love with it, and went to see it seven times. In fact, it was my infatuation with this film that prompted me to seek out Hard Eight in the first place.

Watching Boogie Nights now, it's even more impressive how well Anderson managed to walk a real tonal tightrope. I mean, there's no denying that we laugh at the actions of some of the characters, but the film is also genuinely moving.

Punch-Drunk Love is also terrific. I'll never forget watching it in a packed house on opening night. It was doubly thrilling watching it in that context -- first, it was a great film, but also the horrific realization that the audience came to, namely that this wasn't the Adam Sandler they were used to. I really thought this film would mark a new chapter in his career, rather than being just a wonderful blip.

Hard Eight? It's very good, albeit in a more modest way. I can't get behind the thread title, because I don't think the "far and away" is accurate.

ridiculous, punch drunk love was way beneath pt andersen, after that there will be blood was just a lot of over acting and less about the writing

sydney is in his top three easily.

Magnolia 95%
Boogie Nights 94%
Punch Drunk Love 92%
Hard Eight 91%
There Will Be Blood 91%

They are all VERY good, and its hard to set a % on them, but i think this is it for me.
