A great little GEM!!!

I just saw this last night ... and was VERY impressed. 10 outta 10 from me.

Philip Baker Hall, deserved an Oscar (at least) for the understated lead!!
John C. Reilly, I've always liked/rated, was as I expected Excellent
Gwyneth Paltrow, the weakest link ... overacted (as per usual)

Overall! a wonderful film.

I just read a review that said Sammy L was awesome. You didn't mention him.

Did he shine?

He did his usual bit. No surprises.

They're funny people, the Italians. Culture really isn't their thing.

Samuel L Jackson stole every scene he was in..he was fantastic. All of the acting in this film was stellar...Obviously its a PTA film.

He's a silent guardian, watchful protector. The Dark Knight

The film's a gem for sure. It's an impressive debut from PTA (made at the ripe age of 26) and every stitch and pitch hits home. Not a towering work of art, but certainly underrated when it was given a token release. The actors are all splendidly alive, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the obnoxious jerk with a mullet at the craps table makes me laugh everytime.

I just discovered this film myself, and it was excellent, i could not stop watching, it held me from start to finish, few movies do that for me these days.

I wouldn't say it's a 10/10 film, and it's probably #5 out of the 5 PTA films for me, but I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I loved it, moreso than a lot of people I've heard talk about it.

I'd give it a 9/10, myself. In the grand scheme of PTA's films:

1. Magnolia- 10/10
2. Boogie Nights- 10/10
3. Punch-Drunk Love- 10/10
4. There Will Be Blood- 9/10
5. Hard Eight- 9/10

Sorry, Maury. I'm not a gymnast.

There's no way I'd ever give Hard Eight and There Will Be Blood the same score. Hard Eight was entertaining and well-made enough that it held my interest til the end, but in the end I'd give it a 5/10 which for me is a very very good score for most movies.

Great movie. Excellent performance by Philip Baker Hall

"H8" is a very satisfying film that is enjoyable to watch. If you are fan of PTA's work, you definitely should see Hard Eight.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman. No one ever mentions his bit part during the scene at the craps table. One of his great early roles.
