Why no Oscar nomination?

If I have any facts wrong, please feel free to point them out.

I believe this picture received no Academy Award nominations, right? This, in a year when "Shakespeare In Love" with (puke, puke, puke) Ben Affleck in it, was voted Best Picture?

Why would anybody give any credence to the Academy Awards? I certainly don't. In fact, I'm still pissed off that Bogart beat out Brando in 1951.

Here's looking at you, kid.

Yeah it definately deserved a nomination for best picture. Didnt deserve to win though, but not getting a nom. was really unfair. It's a very underated movie.

reply

no way

this movie is a bastardization of one of the best novels ever written. that's why it didnt deserve a nomination... i was pissed after seeing this (i mean, i didnt expected the exact wording of the book, but most of the characters were completely different... kinda like the dracula movie, totally different)

This was a great movie. It is different than the novel, however, the movie in and of itself, to me, was intensely moving. I felt it was overlooked at Oscar time, but the reason could have been because it veered off in different directions and was not completely true to Dickens original story. Also, the setting was modern day. I believe Dickens wrote Great Expectations around the latter part of the 1800's.

Being crazy has its perks.

I sort of agree. I didn't like the film at all, but not really because it was shot differently; I just think that all of the acting was sub-par, and the characters were underdeveloped.
Just... ugh.

peolple common haven´t you learned to separate MOVIES from BOOKS of course it would never satisfy everyone but imagine that there´s no book and the movie stands by itself

I LOVE that fact that this movie didn't recieve all the hype that we now put on.

Otherwise, consider how many feckin' imbeciles would be on this board COMPLAINING due to their lack of competency.

I LOVE underrated films, it makes them all the more special to us.

True gems are never in the limelight, but always in the far corners of the Earth, no?

reply

hmm, maybe youre right and the fact that its underrated makes it more exclusive and personal to us fans, but still...its makes me angry to see it being sold for 6.99 at blockbuster on the rack with 'weekend at bernie's 2'

reply

:D I know what you mean...

btw-you a tennis fan?

reply

LOL... That was funny (mash xo) and I second that.

reply

I ask that question every time I watch this movie. The people of the academy were crazy not to nominate this film.

Woody Allen may be a perv, but I can't help it, I love him.

reply

Kidman....I am in total agreement.

reply

It wasn't better than "Shkaespeare" but "Expectations" did deserve some Oscar love.

3/4

-Best Original Score
-Best Original Song (Wishful Thinking)
-Best Cinematography

reply

This should have been nominated for Best Cinematography, but it's no surprise that Lubezki got screwed by the Academy. Heck, the man couldn't even win with The New World or Children of Men - two of the best photographed films ever made.

reply

why? because most people felt it was a superficial take on the story, overly prettied-up, and with light acting (or 'bad' acting by ethan hawk). don't get me wrong, i loved the movie.

reply

Well, those people are obviously idiots whom I feel sorry for.
