Ack - missed beginning! who's the DeNiro character?

SPOLIER:

OK, so I started watching Great Expectations (on TV) around 20 minutes in. And so the part when DiNiro's character shows up and Finn is sketched out. DiNiro's character makes reference to something in the past clearly that was very traumatizing and had something to do with DiNiro's going to jail.

What happened on the part of the flick I missed?

thank you, michaelflatley. Did he threaten Ethan Hawke? because he seemed pretty traumatized when he recognized him.

I really thought Deniro's character was going to shoot Finn, ala Mark David Chapman...
