Darn flickering computer screens

Such remarkable genetic technology, the ability to travel to a moon of Saturn and back in a year, the processing power to quickly analyze samples . . .
And yet EVERY stupid computer monitor flickers and flickers before showing a profile!

Have you seen Instagram? People take crystal clear pictures with a modern smartphone and then apply effects to make them look like faded Polaroids.

Perhaps it was just a stylistic flourish, in keeping with the retro noir feel of many other aspects of the society. They clearly have the technology to be ultra modern, yet the world is full of throwbacks to a preferred aesthetic past - sometime around the 1950s.

The world as depicted in Gattaca is a blend of retro and new technology - despite the advanced society, people get around in 1950s style coupe cars (that whine because they are all electric), and dress like 50s marketing executives, whether they are heading to work or heading to space.
