sharePerhaps it was just a stylistic flourish, in keeping with the retro noir feel of many other aspects of the society. They clearly have the technology to be ultra modern, yet the world is full of throwbacks to a preferred aesthetic past - sometime around the 1950s.
The world as depicted in Gattaca is a blend of retro and new technology - despite the advanced society, people get around in 1950s style coupe cars (that whine because they are all electric), and dress like 50s marketing executives, whether they are heading to work or heading to space.
