Is it just me or are genuinely thought provoking and original sci-fi movies like this fading? I just saw this for the first time and I absolutely loved it. Full disclosure, you may see my rating for this compared to my other highly rated films (such as superhero movies) and think that is contradictory. But my point is not that I dislike these big budget franchise films, I just wish there were more movies that try to do what this film tried (and succeed) to do. I guess the fact that there are so many franchises is probably why less of these mid-budget sci-fi movies are being made. Why risk money on a smart, original property when you can make money off another remake, franchise, or superhero movie... Catch 22 for me as a fan of both.
Anyway back to my point, does anyone agree or am I just not looking in the right places? The best Sci-fi movies that I can compare to this that have come out recently (that I have enjoyed) are:
Ex-Machina Moon Interstellar Inception The Martian Source Code
And a few others. That actually isn't bad, maybe I am just clutching at straws here.
I think Minority Report (2002) belongs up there, even if I didn't like it at first, but over the years I've grown to become fond of it. One could argue that Minority Report is just Tom Cruise's bandwagon jump following the release of The Matrix (1999), but I think thanks to Spielberg's storytelling there's much more beyond the surface.
Moon is quite good. I haven't seen Interstellar but I didn't like Inception much. Source Code was a very decent/competent action sci-fi movie, but not necessarily thought-provoking.
Ex Machina could be considered Alex Garland's dark version of The Truman Show (1998). I have not seen The Martian but it sounds like inspired on Gravity (2013).
You may want to check out (if you haven't already)/also love:
- Transfer (2010) - Sunshine (2007) - "Black Mirror" (2011) - British anthology series - Code 46 (2003) - The Prestige (2006) - Children Of Men - Chronicle - Solaris (2002) - I didn't like it though. I have not seen the original from 1972. - Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - Cypher (2002) - more or less a white-collar version of Total Recall (1990) - A.I.: Artificial Intelligence - Bicentennial Man - Limitless - Contact (1997)
and in a similar vein as Source Code:
- Looper - Frequency - Deja Vu - Mission To Mars
However, Gattaca (1997) is my all-time top favorite movie, so personally I don't think any of these titles can top it. :)
I agree with many of your picks, and I appreciate the list. I will certainly give a few of them a watch coming from a big fan of Gattaca (which I absolutely loved). But I was trying to make a post that was more about the current state of Sci-fi originals (or ones based off original books). Like in the last 10 years. I probably should have added The Prestige because that is probably among my top movies of all time and that does fall into the 10 year period that I would be considering (only barely though).
But as I was typing I was starting to realize that there certainly have been some fantastic Sci-fi films over the last 10 years too, just perhaps slightly less than what was coming out in the 90's- early 2000s. So it might a bit short sighted to say that these genuinely thought provoking Sci-fi films are fading out. I would even add The Matrix to the list of great Sci-fi, but the sequels take it into a whole different (and worse, in my opinion) direction.
