Caught it in Netlflix and really loved it, very different than what I expected though, very deep...However I've never heard anyone mention this movie and I just stumbled on this movie accidentally..Why isn't this movie more well-known??
I'm happy to hear that you found this movie. I hadn't heard of Gattaca until a few years after its release, and I was disappointed that I hadn't caught it in the movie theater even though I could have if I had simply known about it (in other words, if the studios had simply advertised the movie more).
Nowadays, this movie is rather well-known among people who are interested in intelligent sci-fi movies or who watch a broad scope of movies. Many viewers have watched Gattaca in school as part of biology, science or philosophy/ethics class, so apparently teachers mostly know about this movie (and many students again forget about the movie because they found it "boring").
I'm a regular on the Lists & Recommendations board and Gattaca is my personal most favorite movie so I've been recommending it at any chance I get, but it's not everyday that someone asks "Please recommend me a deep, intelligent sci-fi movie that doesn't rely on fast paced action, impressive scenery and plot twists". (And to be fair, many regular users on IMDb have already seen Gattaca.)
Other movies that you may like and that you may not have heard of before:
Also check out other work by the same director: Lord Of War, The Truman Show (written but not directed by Niccol), S1m0ne (although not a very strong movie, IMO), Good Kill (also starring Ethan Hawke).
Thanks for the recommendation, I've only heard of Moon from your list but I'll definitely check the rest out, thanks...Yes I feel like this movie kinda caught me by surprise because I was expected it to be something very different like Interstellar, Inception, Gravity but it turns out to be more of a philosophical movie than sci-fi, it really caught me by surprise by I really enjoyed it..
Thanks for your reply. I had a similar experience, I had expected an action thriller like Minority Report but in space at first viewing. Hence I felt rather disappointed, until I figured out what the real story was here when I watched the movie for a second time.
It's not the kind of thing that will hit all demographics, as it's not trying to be. It's science fiction of the ideas kind, but with strong emotions, melodrama scifi if you like, not something for everyone. And it didn't really bust any blocks back when it was released in the cinema, that never helps a film.
But I feel it has a good reputation among film fans that are into this very specific type of thing.
Yeah its essentially a science fiction drama, which sounds super lame, but it works really well. A lot of people are turned off by the fact that it is a science fiction film without crazy space battles though.
