Why did Jude Law.........[Spolier]
....Kill himself ? Why was there a need ?
Basically it seemed like he realized from the moment that got that silver metal it was apparent he was not the best. And nothing less then the best would or could be allowed. He also tried to kill himself and couldn't manage that one the first time either.
So once he saw that this was life would be like, stuck in a chair having to hide himself, not swimming etc. He saw no other out. His name could be carried on as something of value again with Vincent and that would be the last good dead/ good thing he would ever accomplish as Jerome/ Eugene. But once he let go of his name ( and left it in good standing) he was ready to let go of his body and could do it in a way where no one would ever find out. And he could take his shame to the grave.
Well said, that's exactly what I took from the story!
Here's a small take that would ruin that though. The doctor at the end lets him through the screening because he has a son who idolizes Jerome and may be genetically messed up himself. When "Jerome" walks away, they share a moment that, to me, says "go do this and come back to fight to make it acceptable". There's the fork and I'd say you have to follow the latter. Unfortunately besmirching the actual Jerome's name.
What a great movie!
Consider the characters ...
Jude's was born near perfect but artificially, he didn't want to live his life, and ended up intentionally disabled.
Hawkes was born disabled, wanted nothing more than to overcome it and to exceed the achievements of the artificial and lifeless surrounding him.
Judes death is pure symbolism. Nature over Artificiality.
It's a hopeful message, as we spin into this Brave New World.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and believe it to be one the most overlooked.
Please edit and change the subject heading of your post. It contains a MAJOR SPOILER.
You could change it into "In the end, why did Jude Law... [SPOILER]".

Well 2 possible reasons:
1) Before the start of the movie, and after the accident, he was ready to end his life since he was no longer the perfect being and his disability has now practically ended his life and ambitions. After encountering Vincent, he decided to "extend" his life by working on his "project" to create or mold the 'perfect him' out of somebody else. Once his project was complete, he no longer saw any reason to carry on living.
2) There is a very high possibility that Vincent's real identity would be discovered. After all, you can't really hide fake urine and fake blood and fake sweat and fake hair etc etc for a whole year in an enclosed space. Meaning, Vincent would likely be found out by the time he gets back to Earth. He would be punished for identity fraud and the real Jerome too. And since the real Jerome completed his mission anyway, to get Vincent into space, he thought there's no point continuing his life in prison.
2) Jerome/Vincent said there would be no tests on their mission, which means he could go undetected for years unless he comes clean himself.
It looks like the Dr's son will attempt to do the same as Vincent.
He kills himself so that Jerome and Eugene becomes one (of course he already had a suicidal behavior before the events)
shareThere was a scene when Jerome/Vincent was carrying him to bed because he was so drunk, and Eugene/Jerome said something like, "I was sober when I stepped in front of that car.... If you don't succeed, try try again." He always wanted to commit suicide after placing 2nd in the swim meet, but it wasn't until after Jerome/Vincent lent him his dream that he was finally at peace.

Every person that served can be called a veteran, but not every veteran can be called a Marine.
"I was sober when I stepped in front of that car.... If you don't succeed, try try again."
But if Vincent lent him his dream, shouldn't Jerome have been able to find peace with his inabilities and keep living? Vincent would have been an inspiration. And, as they intimate, Vincent will die shortly from his heart (they don't say how old they are), Jerome would have been able to pick up as himself, and live out his new life.
shareI actually had a completely different take on it, than everybody else.
It was my interpretation that Jude Law realized this was it; the last best and prominent role he would ever go on to starring in, for the remainder of his career. So, in a blaze of glory, he attempted to incinerate himself before any tabloid scandals or the making of Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow, Alfie, etc.
This is the only part of the movie that let me down, as obviously, he did not succeed -- otherwise a near flawless movie.
Coming up on 20 years, so this post comes around every so often.
"Are you colorblind too Vincent? It's silver. Jerome Morrow was never meant to be one step down on the podium. With all I had going for me, I was still second best."
"You know I wasn't drunk. When I walked in front of that car. I stepped right out in front of it. I've never been more sober in my life. I couldn't even get that right could I? If at first you don't succeed, try try again."
It's foreshadowing that sometimes goes unnoticed.
If you have to title and author your quotes, they aren't worth quoting.
Gee my take on this was different from everyone else here. By killing himself and burning his body Jude Law was giving his identity to Vincent as a gift. It was his way of telling Vincent that he earned his identity. With Jude Law out of the way Vincent was no longer a "borrowed ladder".
