Why? The movies are almost identical (and that includes the story, the acting, etc). Why is there such a big difference in the ratings?

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.
I, for one, found the killers in this one far more frightening than the killers in the remake. The casting here makes the movie much more unsettling/unnerving and that's why I consider the original superior.

Agreed. I found the killers in the original more disturbing/convincing. Also somehow the language played a part here --- German in the original just seems more fitting to the story, maybe a culture thing.
