Meh. Severely overrated.

It is.

Not particularly shocking, gripping. The breaking the 4th wall thing just seemed cheap & gimmicky.

Whatever this thing serves up is done better elsewhere.

Either you write off the 4th wall thing as a gimmick and miss out, or you think about it and take something away, whether you like the utilization or not.

Or it was done poorly here but done well elsewhere. I don't get your point: "you either like breaking of the fourth wall in Funny Games or you hate is wherever it's done" seems to be the dichotomy you're drawing here, but it's a false dichotomy.

Bollocks, the breaking of the 4th wall in this film WAS a gimmick, if you cannot make your point without resorting to this and some other even cheaper tricks . . .then you're doing a poor job.

This movie was so repetitive, childish, over the top that I found it insulting, I wish this had not been my intro to Haneke's work, but I have great hopes for his other films to be better than this pile of rubbish.

The only thing I CAN say is that some of the acting was well done, considering what they had to work with.

From Wikipedia: "A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. The special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, the gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature".

The breaking of the 4th wall wasn´t by any means irrelevant to the film´s themes of "message", hence it´s not a gimmick. Its usage here IS rather heavy handed, though.

Depends on how you define the relevance factor, a gimmick can still relate back to the movie (or product etc) but still be seen as a cheap and tawdry distraction with little overall relevance. So I feel it is somewhat subjective.

If you like the film chances are you think the breaking was well implemented and somewhat visionary, if you hate it then chances are you think it was tacky, heavy handed and completely irrelevant.

I clearly fall into the latter group and hold this movie up as a pinnacle of cinematic failure.

Well let´s just say it´s redundant. And indeed kinda tacky (mentioned ´heavy handed´ already in the previous post). Bizarre how Haneke thought it´s such a great concept that it needed to be made twice; some seriously misguided sense of mission there.

Yeah, I know. I'm still looking forward to seeing more of his works though, my best friend has pretty good taste and one of his favourite films in Haneke so I believe it will heal my wounds.

I think his Cache and Das Weisse Band are genuinely excellent movies. Recommended.

Funny Games' breaking of the forth wall was clearly not a gimmick. It does serve a purpose, though I fail to see how it relates to Haneke's statement that Funny Games is meant to be a moralistic stance against violence within the media. Instead, breaking the forth wall in Funny Games felt quite sadistic.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
