I love this movie too.

I think that Linda was a little clueless and with Gerald leaving the house every day and saying that he was going to work, she just kept up her usual habits. If none of her cards were declined, she may not have been really paying attention.

They obviously had savings. Six months of savings with him getting his dole money as well, it's not beyond the realms of possiblity that he could've got away with it for that long.
