Me Dave, I do.
As a male, getting up there in years and not feling particularly handsome or desireable, that line is the most heartbreaking and reassuring line I've ever heard. I'm still looking for that woman.

shareThat line is very sweet, I agree.
shareIt's a lovely little line, delivered perfectly by the always excellent Lesley Sharp - made my eyes sting when I was watching this on Channel 4 earlier on.
I just got done taming a wild honeymoon stallion for you guys.

Well, with the sensitivity, honesty, and heart you display with that comment, it doesn't seem to me you would have any problem finding a nice woman. FWIW, I don't get the "Dave-is-fat" thing. He looks fine to me. He's not slender like Robert Carlyle, but he's hardly Santa Claus, either. All the guys look fine to me, from the beautifully muscled, well-endowed guy to the older, balding guy. They all have their charm.
I agree. I didn't think Dave was fat. I would go for him!
I loved all of the guys in this movie!

Despite the claim that women have a monopoly on poor body image, men are just as bad, if not worse. I've been skinny all my life and as I age, I've slowly been adding to a spare tire. If the weight had been going on evenly, I'd be happy but my upper body is still underdeveloped. I have issues with it but I've found a woman who thinks I'm just fine the way I am.
I wanted to smack Dave in this movie, because I knew his wife would understand and support him in anything he did. Just the way she called him 'big man' all the time should have told him that he was everything she wanted in a man, Chippendale fantasies aside.

I'm sure you'll find her. *message board huggle*

Me too. "I like a man with a little meat on his bones." It's also a plus that he cares about other issues and not just himself. What a darling.
Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?
I'd also go for a guy like Dave. He's so nice and sensitive. I hope you find your woman soon.
shareI agree. I first saw this film when I was in junior high (when it first came out) and thought Dave was an adorable man. He seemed cuddly and sweet. Now, as a woman, I feel the same way. Mark Addy's an attractive guy, and the character of Dave was very vulnerable and kind, which is incredibly attractive. Just like many "fit" men can look at a heavier woman and say, "I like a girl with some meat on her bones" there are fit women who can say the same thing about a heavier man.
My favorite part in this whole film is during the strip scene where the men are taking off their shirts. You can see Dave's apprehension at showing his belly, but when he rips of his shirt and and hears his wife and her friends cheer for him, it warms my heart every time. I love that look of pride on Dave's face at that moment.

This is the most romantic line this film. As someone who is overweight, I could only wish for someone to say that to me. It clearly shows someone who loves the person and not the personage. The only scene that is close to this evocative is when Gaz's son asked "He's not allowed?" when he wants to go swimming. The third great scene is the male bonding scene when they play soccer. Come up and see me, anytime.
