car scene with Lomper (I think)

One minute Dave's helping a guy start his broken-down car, then the next minute Dave's running back to the car, opens the door, and throws the driver to the ground. Then later Dave says to the driver, "Of course I'm your mate. I saved your life, didn't I?" -- or something to that effect. Can anyone explain to this Yank what just happened? Did they previously know one another?

If you re-watch the scene and look at the passenger side window, you'll notice a pipe running into his car, which Lomper is using to trap the fumes from his exhaust in the car to kill himself. Dave running back to the car in a frenzied panic is due to the sudden realisation that he's just assisted someone committing suicide. Later on they're just joking about ways that Lomper could be able to kill himself; when the suggestion to have a mate run into him with a car comes up and he says he doesn't have any mates, Dave and Gaz inform him that they are in fact his mates and would "run him down as soon as look at him".

Thanks, Squee. Totally missed that. I was probably watching the Hebrew subtitles, trying to keep up with the dialog. This was helfpul.
