Oscar for Best Music??

Did this film had any other ORIGINAL music by Rachel Portman, except the main theme and just one other piece? Because if it didn't...then that must be the easiest Oscar win ever! Just a couple of pieces! Of course, back then they had divided the Oscar for Best Score to Dramatic and Musical/Comedy. The Dramatic went to "Titanic", but they could give the Musical/Comedy at least to Hans Zimmer for "As Good As It Gets". The other three ("Anastasia", "My Best Friend's Wedding", "Men In Black") weren't anything much.
I guess they wisely decided afterwards not to divide the Music category, because Musical/Comedy scores suck nowadays (they used to be great once).

Men in Black wasn't anything much?! Whatcho talking about, Willis?

What you have to remember is that the music she wrote was used in subtle ways to convey certain situations, and the mood of those situations. Sometimes different instruments were used in different situations to this effect. Music isn't just meant to be a background noise but one that carries the film along, almost like another character. Get the two-disc special edition of the film on DVD and in the special features section you can listen to her explain the use of the music.
