My brother and I have a disagreement of the time the film takes place. I say it is was filmed current day (ie 1997) due to the Eric Cantona reference, however, he says it takes place in the 80's when all the steel factories were shut down.
Anyone know for certain the date the film takes place.
Although it doesn't clearly say, I'm saying it was supposed to be in current day (1997) or 1996, the year the film was most likely filmed. I do believe that some of the cars seen in the background are late models. The documentary at the beginning, I believe is somewhere dated 1972, then the opening title says "25 years later". shareit was filmed in April 1996 and has to be set then - in addition to the Cantona reference, the technology in the job club, Gaz's Sheffield United shirt (and I'd imagine Dave's Steelers shirt) are from that era, plus the "Arsenal offside trap" reference wouldn't have been relevant until at least 1989.
Not seen a film for a while, I'm sure there are other things besides football references and a PC that would also point to it being in the 90s
Good point with the PC, besides that I would say the clothes they are wearing are rather typical of the 90s.

I first signed on in 1999 and it was only for a week, but the set-up at the job centre was similar to how it is now - very open plan, no screen/partition*. You sat down in a waiting area until your name was called, then you sat across a desk from the advisor/work coach.
Maybe this format had only come in during the late 90s though.

Even if it would be inaccurate for the time, the set piece of them dancing to Hot Stuff while in the queue is so good I'll happily overlook it!
*well they have screens/partitions again now but for very different reasons!
