I was eqaully amazed when I learned that at one point it was the highest grossing film of all time in the UK. (For about six months, until it was overtaken by Titanic) Infact even now it's still the 12th highest grossing film in the UK, outperforming newer blockbusters despite ticket inflation. That $257m would most likely be closer to $400 million at todays prices.

And it's funny, I think it's much better than Titanic and a does the Brits prouder than the Harry Potter series. Yes, I'm the rare Harry hater.

So what? It's not about a movie's budget, it's also marketing. That isn't cheap. That $3.5M would not include marketing costs.
