A lot of people still wondering why this movie has got such success becoming a blockbuster!
Do you know what? I am into esoteric study and other stuff. I can only to say you an advice..try watching this movie in very slow motion and sometime you'll find....SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES!...
but you need to find good version I mean early one especially in vhs.
Warning!! you need a lot of patience.

the reason the movie was a great success was because it was funny.
It started off grim but it showed hope. None of the men were happy but by the end of the movie they'd become friends and sorted themselves out a bit.
If you can only enjoy the movie by looking at it slowly for subliminal messages then you shouldnt be watching movies.

This attitude of 'I don't like it so there must be subliminal messaging' confuses me

I don't think the film was/is a hit because of its so called subliminal messages. That would be far fetched.
The film shows that even in the worst situations of life, there can be a solution, a little something that can just suddenly make things brighter and even better in the end.
The mix between the real life problems the characters have to deal with and the funny way to solve these problems was/is the key to the film's success.
The film was made in 1997, but it can still apply to nowadays. The problems it shows are still very up to date.
